Our Training Philosophy
Building trust through science-based positive reinforcement
The Foundation of Our Approach
At Wagwise Training, we believe that every dog deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and understanding. Our training philosophy is rooted in the latest scientific research in animal behavior and learning theory, combined with four years of practical experience serving Miami families.
We understand that dogs are not trying to be "dominant" or "stubborn" – they're simply trying to navigate our human world with the tools they have. Our role is to give them better tools through clear communication, consistent guidance, and positive experiences that make learning enjoyable.
Our Core Principles
Force-Free Methods Only
We never use shock collars, prong collars, choke chains, or any tools designed to cause discomfort or fear. Training should never hurt. Instead, we use flat collars, harnesses, and long lines that allow dogs to learn safely and comfortably.
Positive Reinforcement Focus
We reward the behaviors we want to see more of, rather than punishing mistakes. This creates confident, eager learners who enjoy training sessions and develop stronger bonds with their humans. Dogs learn faster and retain more when they're having fun.
Individual Assessment
Every dog is unique. We consider breed characteristics, personal history, temperament, and individual motivations when designing training plans. What works for one dog may not work for another, and that's perfectly normal.
Clear Communication
Dogs don't speak English, but they're excellent at reading patterns and body language. We teach consistent cues and help dogs understand exactly what we're asking, setting them up for success rather than confusion.
Family Education
We're not just training dogs – we're educating families. We teach you to understand your dog's body language, recognize stress signals, and implement training techniques that everyone in the household can use consistently.
Ethical Responsibility
We stay current with the latest research and continuously educate ourselves. If new evidence shows better methods, we adapt. We're committed to doing what's best for dogs, not what's always been done.
LIMA: Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive
We follow the LIMA principle, which means we always use the least intrusive, minimally aversive methods that will effectively achieve the training goals. This hierarchy of interventions ensures we try the gentlest approaches first:
- Health and Nutrition: Ensuring medical issues aren't causing behavior problems
- Environmental Management: Setting up the environment for success
- Positive Reinforcement: Rewarding desired behaviors
- Negative Punishment: Removing rewards for unwanted behaviors (like turning away when a dog jumps)
- Additional Interventions: Only if absolutely necessary and under careful consideration
This systematic approach ensures we're always working in the dog's best interest, addressing root causes rather than suppressing symptoms.
